Objectives/Outcomes:
a) Enabling students to obtain certificates to make students employable in the industry or pursue a higher education program.
b) Relevant exposure to tools and technologies are being offered.
Concept:
The National Program on technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) has initiated certification courses offered on the model of MOOCs on its online courses portal . Through an online portal, online courses are being offered. These courses are typically on topics relevant to students along with basic core courses in sciences and humanities. The enrollment to and learning from these courses involves no cost. Following the online courses, an in-person, proctored certification exam is conducted and a certificate is provided through the participating institutions and industry, when applicable.
Features:
a) Establishment of NPTEL Local Chapter in the college:
A letter on college’s letterhead from principal of the college is required stating that college is interested in establishing NPTEL Local Chapter
b) Appointing Single Point of Contact (SPOC):
A faculty member, librarian or any other staff member interested is appointed as SPOC to interface between NPTEL and the college.
The Practice:
a) SPOC attends NPTEL workshops, visits IIT and learn process and job responsibilities
b) SPOC requests HOD’s to appoint faculty as NOC coordinator from each department
c) Meeting of NOC coordinators
d) SPOC inform about new courses or any procedural changes to NOC team
e) SPOC displays brochures on notice boards if provided by NPTEL
f) SPOC publicize the courses amongst the students and faculties and inform them about the courses being offered currently
g) SPOC along with the team encourage students and faculties to enrol in the courses before the last enrolment date
h) Departmental coordinators maintain a record of students and faculty enrolment details
i) SPOC is in continuous touch with IIT’s, departments coordinators and students
j) SPOC keeps a track on number of enrolments and trouble shoots problems
k) SPOC recommends scholarship to deserving candidates
l) SPOC appoints mentors for NOC
m) SPOC along with coordinators encourage students to appear for exam
n) Declaration of results

The results indicate that in every semester the number of participants enrolling the NPTEL online Certification Course has increased. Most of the participants use these courses to increase their knowledge and skills and only few participants pay the exam fees and go for a certification.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOCs)

Objectives/Outcomes:
a) To enhance skills and gain essential knowledge required for student’s field or brushing up the basic key concepts,
b) To build a strong resume and character ultimately grooming students to get easily absorbed in a cooperate life.
Concept:
MOOC is a free online educational program designed by a group of very outstanding professors from famous universities across the globe intended for an unlimited number of participants located at any corner of the world. Interested participants surfs these websites for the courses of their interest and enroll themselves. Further each participant needs to clear the final exam. On successful completion, participants are issued Statement of Accomplishment (without fees for few courses) or certificate (with fees).
Features:
a) Flexibility of time, place, topic and university
b) Excellent professors can reach more students all over the world
c) Slow Learners can review the videos, pause it to understand as per their pace
d) Low Income participants can acquire knowledge from professors of high class institutes
e) Interaction through peer review and group collaboration helps social network building
The Practice:
a) Appoint faculty as a coordinator from each department to form MOOC committee
b) Meeting of MOOC coordinators
c) Coordinators search for MOOC courses online
d) College Level MOOC In charge prepares MOOC list and shares it with departmental coordinator
e) Departmental coordinator publicize MOOCs and encourage students to enrol a course from the MOOC list or of their choice using internet
f) Distribute MOOC course list to students
g) Keep a track of students undertaking courses
h) After successful completion of course, collect certificates from students
i) Department MOOC coordinator maintains a record of course completed students
j) College Level MOOC In charge clubs the record together and document it properly.
